Coober Pedy é uma pequena cidade mineira na Austrália, e é conhecida como a capital mundial da opala, uma pedra preciosa muito usada pelos reis na antiguidade. Os antigos acreditavam que uma pessoa poderia ficar invisível se enrolasse uma opala numa folha de louro fresco, e a transportasse junto de si para onde fosse.

Esta é uma cidade com uma particularidade: é quase toda subterrânea, e quem vive ali precisa adaptar-se a estas características.

O que sobressai na paisagem plana e indiferente são algumas chaminés que brotam da terra, no meio do caminho. São poços de ventilação para a maioria das casas que, na verdade, estão debaixo da terra. São as chamadas “dugouts”, covas escavadas para os moradores escaparem do calor sufocante do deserto.

Tudo em Coober Pedy é subterrâneo: não só as casas, como também as lojas, os hotéis, os bares, e até as igrejas.
